Armando Nava Appointed to the Mayor’s Police Reform Committee
Mayor Kate Gallego recently appointed criminal defense lawyer Armando Nava to her Review and Implementation Ad Hoc Committee on police reform.
The ad hoc committee will review the following:
- Berkshire Advisors Report
- Chief Williams’ 5 Point Plan presented at the July 2, 2019 Council Meeting
- Community and Police Trust Initiative Report
- Community Outreach and Engagement Report
- Community feedback on officer social media posts
- Community survey as outlined at the July 2, 2019 Council Meeting
- National Police Foundation Report on officer involved shootings
- Recognition and awards process
“I’m looking forward to lending my experience as a criminal defense attorney to the Mayor’s committee” Nava said when asked about his service. Mr. Nava’s father was a police officer in El Paso, Texas for almost thirty years. “I grew up around law enforcement, so I have always been passionate about ways to make policing safer for both officers and the members of the community they serve.” The committee’s purpose is to review past and current recommendations made to the Phoenix City Council and the Phoenix Police Department that could strengthen police-community relations. The committee will provide monthly reports to the city council and will “sunset in June of 2020 with a final report.
